The gate was built in the 14th century, as part of the expansion of the first wall. The date is supported by the presence on the northern wall of a coat of arms depicting a rampant lion dating back to 1313.
In a parchment of the 16th century, preserved in the Vatican Archive, the door is represented in a significantly different way from the current one, the roof is gabled with slits at the top.
With the passing of the centuries, the structure has been modified to the characteristics that can be admired today. After the 1997 earthquake, the gate was restored with targeted consolidation interventions, both internal and external.
