Venanzio Filippo Piersanti was born in Matelica in 1688 to Francesco Maria di Giovanni Piersanti and Faustina Orsi. After a short ecclesiastical career, in 1718, at just thirty years of age he was appointed Master of Ceremonies of the Pontifical Chapel by Pope Clement XI who, on August 15 of the same year, appointed him his “family member and diner” giving him prestigious positions within the Roman Curia.
The important assignments he held allowed him to collect artistic furnishings (paintings, tapestries, furniture and various objects) over the years and to build a domestic chapel inside the family palace in Matelica.
Venanzio Filippo Piersanti died in Rome in 1761 and his inheritance passed to his sister Giocondina and his brother Giovanni who resided in Matelica in the family palace. The two heirs, according to the will, must share all the assets “movable, stable, credit and other existing both in Rome and in Matelica”. Around the domestic oratory was founded the first nucleus of the Piersanti Museum that derives in large part from the furnishing of the palace of Monsignor Piersanti, in Matelica, maintained and enriched by his heirs.
At the beginning of the 20th century Teresa Capeci Piersanti donated the palace with allits artistic value to the Chapter and parish of the Cathedral, in fulfillment of the will of her husband, the Marquis Filippo Piersanti, the last heir of the family and the first mayor of Matelica after the Unity of Italy.
Over the years the museum has received numerous other donations that have increased its cultural and artistic heritage: the works not on display are waiting for the completion of the accommodation on the second floor of the palace, where additional rooms will be opened for the exhibitions.
To allow post-earthquake restoration work, the Piersanti Museum is temporarily closed to the public.
