Monumental Octogonal Fountain

Piazza Mattei, Matelica

It is an octagonal fountain in white stone, dated 1587 and designed by the architect of the Santa Casa di Loreto, Lattanzio Ventura from Urbino.

From the central basin emerge four statues of marine deities (renamed in dialectal language Biutinu, Maccagnanu, the Mermaid and the Fast), whereas on the panels are placed the papal coats of arms of Sisto V and other cardinals.

In 1619, an inscription was engraved to Cardinal Scipione Caffarelli Borghese, protector of the city.
