Monumental Octogonal Fountain

Piazza Mattei, Matelica

It’s an octagonal fountain in white stone which dates back to 1587, designed by the architect of the Santa Casa di Loreto, Lattanzio Ventura of Urbino.

From the central bathtub emerge four statues of marine deities (renamed in dialectal language Biutinu, Maccagnanu, the Mermaid and the Fast), on the panels there are papal coats of arms of Sisto V and some cardinals.

In 1619, an inscription was engraved to Cardinal Scipione Caffarelli Borghese, protector of the city.
