Church of Saint Maria Assunta

Loc. Massa (Fiuminata)

The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta is located in the upper part of the town, which develops degrading towards the plain below. A road climbs up through the town leading to the square in front of the church.

The gabled facade is enriched by a travertine portal, with moldings around the wooden door. A linear architrave closes the composition. On the axis there is a thermal window with a ring of stones. Laterally, other thermal windows illuminate the church. On the outside you can see the adjacent buildings, built in later periods, containing the chapels of the Virgin of the Assumption and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, built in the 20th century.

INTERIOR

The church with a single nave is marked by pillars covered in marble and decorated with Doric capitals. Above the entrance there is the choir loft, in the center of which is placed the organ from 1876. On the left wall, introduced by a round arch in modeled stucco, is located the votive chapel dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. A gate closes the entrance to the chapel. At the center of the church, placed symmetrically, two Serlian round arches lead to the side chapels.

After passing the nave and climbing three steps, you reach the presbytery, introduced by an imposing round arch.

On the back wall of the apse, framed by a halo of Baroque style, supported by statues of saints kneeling on silver clouds, is the oval in gilded wood that frames the Marian symbol.
