The church is certainly the oldest in the district: it was built in 1225 and it owes its fame to the Blessed Mattia, who lived here following the rule of Santa Chiara. Today, the order of the Poor Clares is still active.
Locaded west from Matelica’s old town, the monastery also had a devensive function. This was attested through the high bell tower, dated second half of the 15th century. The bell tower was in fact used as a watchtower.
In 1750, the church underwent renovation works led by architect Gaetano Maggi, who decorated it with Baroque elements such as golden vaults and other patterns. The façade we see today is the result of a renovation occurred in 1920.
Inside the Monastery are preserved several artworks: among these, particular attention is given to the painted cross, a unique piece by a painter from the Marche region realised in the 13th century.
