SAN SEVERINO MARCHE is one of the most suggestive cities in the Marche region, set in a valley surrounded by green and soft hills, and in the exact point where the River Potenza encounters the last gorge before flowing towards the sea. Heir to a thousand-year history, treasure chest of art, culture and traditions of inestimable value, the city is full of hidden gems in every corner.
The city is dominated by the suggestive area of the Castello del Monte, which from the top of Monte Nero and with its towering shape unveils San Severino Marche from whichever direction you arrive. Here, among the ancient walls, are gathered all the buildings that were symbol of the splendor of the city in medieval times: the Municipal Tower, the Ancient Cathedral, the churches, the convents and the monasteries scattered around the suggestive town.
The beating heart of the city is Piazza del Popolo, one of the most beautiful in the Marche region. Wide, bright and with a singular elliptical shape, it is surrounded by elegant porticoes and noble palaces, including Palazzo Comunale, and not far from the Feronia Theatre and the Clock Tower, the works of the architect Ireneo Aleandri. From here, the alleys of the historic center branch off, dotted with churches, historic buildings, museums that tell and revive the history of the city through a wonderful journey through time.
Not only there is the city, but also the wonderful hilly landscape that surrounds it, the countryside with plenty of fortresses and castles, which are signs of a rich past of events and memories of acquisitions and conquests of the Municipality from the 12th century to the first half of the 14th century. You can plan different itineraries, depending on the time available, on the way of traveling and above all on the desire of being captured by the atmosphere and the charm of past eras, of the countryside and of the outstanding horizons. From Pitino, to Aliforni, from Isola to Elcito. Towards Serrapetrona you can find the Castle of Colleluce, diverting towards Tolentino the one of Carpignano and towards Cingoli the Castle of Serralta and the Roccaccia.
Morevoer, the thriving nature that explodes in the Nature Reserve of Mt. Canfaito and Mt., with the centuries-old beech forest. But also Monte D’Aria and the Valle dei Grilli, the hills and woods where the River Potenza flows, offer walking or cycling trails. Along the way it is possible to encounter small villages and much more, even viewpoints where the gaze opens to unique landscapes.
The city and its territory offer a variety of possible experiences, including art, culture, incredible landscapes, nature, relax, outdoor activities, food and wine routes and everything else you want to live and taste. Its offer is as wide and varied as for the whole Marche region. You’ll never be disappointed!
The “Fascinoso” itinerary starts from Piazza del Popolo and then continues along the picturesque streets of the historic center, until you reach the charming medieval village of Castello a Monte. The route is particularly suitable for those who love to walk among artistic beauties and nature. Along the way, unexpected views and wonderful landscapes can be discovered. Do not miss it! Whether you go on foot or by bicycle, you can make a detour to discover the surrounding hills though the countless paths.
The museum offer of San Severino allows a real journey through time, from prehistory until the early 1900s. The Archaeological Museum “G. Moretti” and the archaeological area testify to the presence of man as early as from the Paleolithic, passing through the glories of the Roman city of Septempeda. The intense artistic production and cultural fervour that characterized the city from the Middle Ages to the Baroque era is beautifully displayed in the Civic Art Gallery “P. Tacchi Venturi”, and then the modern era up to the nineteenth century in the Gallery of Modern Art, the industrial archeology of the Museum of Borgo Conce, the curiosities of productive life of the last two centuries in the Museum of the Territory and again the testimonies of the Second World War in the War Museum.
Discover the natural wonders of the place through hiking or cycling paths, crossing the many hilly paths or wandering through the woods, beech forests, like in the Nature Reserve of Mt. San Vicino and Mt. Canfaito, and through the ancient routes of faith: the Via Lauretana and the Via Francescana. The “Buca del Terremoto“, a chasm 110-meters wide and 20-meters deep that, according to popular belief, was created following an ancient seismic event. It is also called “Buca d’Aria”, from the Monte d’Aria on which it is located. The Roccaccia, to which you arrive along the ridge of Monte Acuto, and then go back and go down the ladders that lead to the Hermitage of Santa Sperandia, a place of peace and quiet where you will find a small chapel hidden among the rocks of a natural cave.
There are places that even if we talked about them, they would hardly be real, and one of them is Elcito. Here, among white stone houses which surround the remains of the ancient medieval castle located on top of a rocky spur on the slopes of Mount San Vicino, time seems to have stopped. It is described as “The Tibet of the Marche” for its altitude, over 820 meters above sea level, but also “village of silence“, for the feeling of calm, tranquility and silence. For those who live in Elcito and who visit it, it is an extraordinary place where sky and land meet, offering wonderful views and spectacular landscapes. The gaze gets caught by the fading of shapes and nuances of nature down to the sea in the distance.
